A Look Through the Looking Glass: A Disappointing Sequel'

The recent release of 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' film has left many fans of the original story underwhelmed. Despite a blitzkrieg of digital effects and an aesthetic that pays homage to HG Wells meets Hogwarts, the storytelling falls flat. The film lacks heart, opting for action-packed sequences and mind-boggling visuals over meaningful character development.

In this sequel, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) finds herself on a quest to save her beloved Hatter (Johnny Depp) from his morbid depression. To do so, she must steal the chronosphere from Time (Sacha Baron Cohen), who is responsible for the film's funniest moments. The plot takes a predictable turn as Alice travels back in time to meddle with the past, evading patriarchal forces that seek to oppress her.

What's striking about this sequel is its lack of connection to Lewis Carroll's original works. Instead, it seems to be more focused on referencing the first film rather than exploring the world and characters of 'Through the Looking-Glass'. This sense of detachment is further exacerbated by James Bobin's direction, which prioritizes action over storytelling.

It's hard to think of a movie franchise that is less in tune with the spirit of its source material than Disney's adaptations of Lewis Carroll's whimsical Alice stories. Despite its impressive visual effects and nods to beloved characters, 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' fails to capture the essence of Carroll's timeless tales.
